The bison is the larggest of our earth mammals and one of the most magnificent animals found in America.
Today, we count over 400,000 bison heads in America, amongst which 200,000 are found in Canada. Approximately 3,000 bison are counted in the Quebec Province.
A century ago, only 1,000 bison could be found on the surface of the earth. Hunters would decimate entire herds for their meat, hide and ... for fun. Hunting time meant creating a manic within de herd and pushing the animals by hundreds towards the cliff so the could be smashed in the precipice.
However, befor the slahghter, beween 40 and 60 million bison roamed in the wide plains. Unfortunately, very less was done to discourage the hunters, which contributed to the wipe out of the native tribes by destroying their main source of food.
A celebrity William F.Cody owes his nickname Buffalo Bill to this extraordinary achievements as e bison hunter; in less then 18 months, he killed 4,280 heads. Strong with his reputation, he afterwards put up a very popular show where he reconstituted a bison hunt for the public.
Here is the reason why in less than 100 years of colonization, pratically nothing remained of those large gatherings, which as far as the eye can see, blackened the plains.
Nowadays, great care in taken of the survivors and its breeding has become very popular amongst those people wishing to better understand this extraordinary animal and increase their knowledge about it. This is exactly what happened for un young couple of St-Prosper, Daniel Gagnon and Sylvie St-Arneault, the owners of the Ferme La Bisonnière.
