DID YOU KNOW…

* The bison is the biggest land animal living on our continent.

* An adult bison measures between 1.5 to 2 metres and weighs between 635 and 1000kg.

* Bison has two fur coats :
- One coat closer to the body is thick and keeps it warm
- The outer coat is waterproof

* The eyes of a bison can see something moving at a 750 metres distance

* Its’ large muzzle can smell up to 1,5 km

* Its’ two round and hairy ears can hear up to 150 metres away

* Bison feed on wild cereals, wheat, barley, oat and couch grass

* Its’ large and flat muzzle becomes a snowplough to get to its’ meal in the winter

* Alone a bison is miserable, which explains the social side of its’ nature

* If it hears an unusual sound, the bison scares and will probably run away. The rest of the herd will run in a circle. This is called a stampede.

* Bison mate at the end of summer or beginning of fall

* Birth is usually at the beginning of the next summer, when food is abundant
